Finland labor market shows signs of recovery in August

Recent data from Statistics Finland indicates a potential turning point in the Finnish labor market. In August, the number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 34,000 compared to the previous year, while the number of unemployed individuals in the same age group decreased by 5,000.

The trend for the employment rate among those aged 20–64 rose to 75.9 percent, up from a spring low of 75.4 percent. Meanwhile, the trend for the unemployment rate fell to 10.1 percent, down from a peak of 10.6 percent earlier this year.

Economists have noted these developments with cautious optimism. Jukka Appelqvist, Chief Economist at the Central Chamber of Commerce, remarked that while one month is insufficient for definitive conclusions, the statistics are promising and suggest a possible upward turn. However, he noted that employment growth currently relies heavily on part-time work, as full-time positions remain weak. Additionally, the number of new job openings reported in August was 32,900, which is 800 fewer than the previous year, representing a point of disappointment in an otherwise positive report.
