Finland: Majority supports expanding nuclear power

A survey by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EVA) reveals that 59% of Finns consider expanding nuclear power the best solution for increasing electricity production. While support has decreased slightly from the peaks seen during the energy crisis, it remains higher than levels recorded before the expansion of the war in Ukraine.

The study highlights a significant gender divide: 77% of men support additional nuclear power, compared to only 41% of women. Regarding nuclear power permit applications, 48% of respondents believe the next government should approve all applications that meet existing criteria, while 24% oppose this.

Political affiliations also influence views. Support is highest among supporters of the Finns Party (84%) and the National Coalition Party (81%), followed by the Swedish People's Party (65%), the Centre Party (59%), and the Social Democratic Party (53%). Support among Green Party supporters is lower at 41%.

EVA communications manager Mikko Laakso noted that while nuclear power offers independent electricity production, construction is slow and expensive. He emphasized that future governments must address how to ensure electricity availability and affordable pricing amidst rising demand from data centers and industrial investments.
