Finland marks 30th Energy Saving Week with focus on efficiency

Finland is observing its 30th annual Energy Saving Week, themed ‘Energy Drives Everything.’ The initiative emphasizes that small daily changes, such as lowering indoor temperatures by one degree or shortening shower times, can significantly reduce both energy consumption and costs. Experts note that lowering the temperature by one degree can yield approximately five percent energy savings.

The Finnish electricity market has undergone significant shifts due to the rise of renewable energy and the cessation of electricity imports from Russia. These changes have increased price volatility, leading to a rise in spot price electricity contracts, which were expected to grow from nine percent in late 2021 to 34 percent by the end of 2025. Consequently, consumers are increasingly focusing on timing their electricity usage to avoid peak price periods.

At the municipal level, Kirkkonummi is implementing energy efficiency measures across nearly 20 properties, including upgrading ventilation fans and building automation systems. The municipality has already replaced about 80 percent of its street lighting with LED fixtures and has joined the public sector energy efficiency agreement (JETS) for the 2026–2035 period.
