Finland named world's happiest country for ninth consecutive year
Finland has been named the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year according to the 2026 World Happiness Report. The ranking is based on life-evaluation scores rather than immediate emotional states, using the Cantril Ladder method where respondents rate their life on a scale from zero to ten.
Nordic nations continue to dominate the top of the list, with Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway occupying five of the top six positions. Costa Rica achieved a historic milestone by ranking 4th, marking the highest position ever reached by a Latin American nation in the report’s history.
The 2026 top ten includes Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Costa Rica, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Notably, no English-speaking countries appeared in the top ten this year, with Canada dropping to 25th place.
