Finland pitches mining technology to Queensland for critical minerals industry

Finland’s ambassador to Australia, Arto Haapea, met officials in Queensland to promote Finnish mining and processing technology as a catalyst for a multibillion‑dollar critical minerals sector. Queensland, rich in copper and other strategic deposits, is shifting from a “dig and ship” model toward on‑shore refining and manufacturing, as outlined in its 2026‑30 critical minerals strategy and the federal “Future Made in Australia” policy.

Haapea highlighted Finland’s expertise in mining tech and the shared security concerns over Russia and China, noting both nations’ participation in the US‑led Pax Silica Initiative. CSIRO chief research scientist Chris Vernon welcomed the prospect of accelerated approvals and downstream processing, saying it would add significant economic value to the state’s mineral projects.
