European nations resume asylum seeker transfers to Italy FAST-MOVING

Several European nations are resuming or preparing the transfer of asylum seekers to Italy, following the entry into force of the EU's Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR) on June 12, 2026. Germany, Switzerland, and Austria have already initiated or announced these actions. Austria has reportedly conducted four road-based transfers to Italy since the regulation took effect. Switzerland plans to resume transfers by the end of August.

Finland and Sweden have also joined this movement. Finland's Interior Ministry stated that transfers are currently being prepared to ensure EU accountability procedures are applied as intended. Sweden has already performed some transfers and intends to continue doing so to ensure migration is well-managed. The Netherlands has also indicated a similar stance.

In contrast, France and Spain have indicated they do not intend to reactivate migrant repatriations to Italy at this time. The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has characterized the new EU Pact as a positive development for first-entry states, while political opposition members have described the situation as a ‘boomerang’ effect resulting from Italy's recent diplomatic tensions regarding the Schengen Agreement.

According to Eurostat, Italy received 24,152 incoming asylum applications in 2025. The Italian government maintains that transfer requests for individuals arriving before the June 12, 2026, implementation date are void.
