Finland: China privately assured prevention of Russian nuclear use

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated that China has privately assured Finland it will prevent Russia from using nuclear weapons. During a meeting in Helsinki on July 5, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly pledged that Beijing would ‘never allow’ such an escalation to occur.

Stubb characterized the Chinese commitment as an ‘effective deterrent’ against Russian nuclear escalation in the conflict against Ukraine. He suggested that Moscow’s current actions toward NATO are more akin to provocation and information warfare intended to cause European anxiety rather than actual preparations for a direct military assault on the alliance.

While dismissing the likelihood of a Russian attack on NATO due to alliance capabilities, Stubb advised Europeans to remain calm, vigilant, and prepared for the worst to avoid it. He also noted that Europe is approaching a stage where it may need to resume direct political dialogue with Russia.
