Finland records highest diesel prices in Europe
Finland has recorded the highest diesel prices in Europe, with costs reaching approximately €2.43 to €2.48 per liter. This surge brings fuel prices back to 2022 levels. Data from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin indicates that Finland’s prices significantly exceed the EU average, trailing behind only the Netherlands and Denmark in cost. Notably, diesel in neighboring Sweden is approximately €0.57 cheaper per liter than in Finland.
Several factors contribute to these high costs, including geopolitical instability in the Persian Gulf affecting refinery operations, dwindling global fuel reserves, and seasonal demand increases as heating season approaches. Additionally, high taxation in Finland plays a significant role in maintaining elevated prices regardless of global market fluctuations.
The price hike is expected to have a substantial impact on the logistics and transport sectors. According to SKAL ry, diesel accounts for roughly 26 percent of operating costs for transport companies, which consume about 100 million liters of diesel monthly. The significant price gap between Finland and Sweden may also influence businesses to shift production capacity across the border.
