Finland reports surge in gonorrhea infections

Finland is experiencing a significant rise in gonorrhea infections, with record numbers reported in recent years. According to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) infectious disease register, 2,097 cases were recorded in 2025, following a peak of 2,113 cases the previous year.

The increase is particularly pronounced among women, whose infection rates rose by approximately 452% to 463% between 2021 and 2025. Men saw an increase of roughly 264% to 266% during the same period. Health experts note that the infection is increasingly common among young adults.

A major concern for health authorities is the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains, sometimes referred to as a ‘super gonorrhea’. While specialists from HUS state that the situation regarding resistant strains in Finland is not yet critical, they are monitoring it closely. Untreated infections pose serious health risks, including pelvic inflammatory disease and potential infertility in women.
