Finland: SDP criticizes government healthcare fee increases
Social Democratic Party (SDP) Member of Parliament Kim Berg has criticized the government's decision to increase healthcare patient fees. Berg argued that while the National Coalition Party emphasizes economic growth and investment, the rising cost of illness creates a barrier to essential medical services.
Berg noted that medical professionals have reported patients expressing concern over their ability to afford fees, sometimes questioning if payments can be reduced or waived. The SDP representative warned that delaying medical visits due to cost could lead to minor health issues becoming serious, ultimately increasing the long-term burden on society.
According to a survey by the Finnish Cancer Patients Association, nearly half of cancer patients find current healthcare fees financially burdensome, with one in four reporting that they must cut back on food or other necessities to afford care.
