Finland seeks to boost growth through technology entrepreneurship

Finland is facing a critical need to bolster its economic growth by fostering entrepreneurship and accelerating the commercialization of technological research. While the country shows signs of an economic turnaround, experts emphasize that long-term success depends on transforming research results into viable international businesses.

Data indicates that the number of employer-entrepreneurs in Finland has decreased by approximately 22 percent since 2021. In contrast, technology startups play a vital role, employing roughly 50,000 people with a combined turnover of approximately 12.5 billion euros, 90 percent of which is derived from exports. In regions like Tampere, companies such as Framery, Gofore, and M-Files have demonstrated the potential for technology-driven companies to create thousands of jobs and significant revenue.

To sustain growth, there is a call for stronger technology policies and increased resources in higher education to encourage students to become founders rather than just employees. Additionally, public R&D funding should be more aggressively directed toward the commercialization of research to ensure that Finland's high level of innovation translates into industrial productivity and export value.
