Finland sees sharp decline in security account fraud losses

Successful security account frauds in Finland have seen a sharp decline during the first half of the year. According to Finanssiala ry, Finnish citizens lost approximately 2 million euros to these specific scams in the first six months, while banks successfully blocked about 1.9 million euros in attempted fraudulent transfers.

This represents a significant decrease compared to the previous year, when losses from security account scams totaled 38.4 million euros. Niko Saxholm, head of fraud and crime prevention at Finanssiala ry, emphasized that “no such thing as a security account exists. It never has.”

In these scams, fraudsters pose as bank officials to warn victims of unauthorized large payments and manipulate them into transferring funds to a fake “security account.” While successful fraud cases have dropped, the total number of fraud attempts has increased. Between January and June, banks recorded 6,000 successful frauds and 14,000 blocked attempts, totaling 20,000 fraud attempts.
