Finland survey: 65% of workers feel they lack optimal job performance

A survey conducted by Verian for LähiTapiola, titled ‘Arjen katsaus’, reveals that only 30% of Finnish workers feel they perform their jobs at an optimal level. The majority, approximately 65%, believe they are unable to achieve their best possible performance.

Optimal performance is defined in the study as a balance between professional goals, personal well-being, and work results, where tasks are completed effectively without excessive strain. While 21% of respondents reported performing better than expected, 16% described their performance as inconsistent.

The data shows no significant difference in performance self-assessment between men and women. However, age is a notable factor: 42% of those aged 55–64 reported optimal performance, which experts attribute to the confidence and prioritization skills gained through years of work experience. Susa Nikula, LähiTapiola’s director of people and culture, noted that while over-performing can be productive in the short term, tying self-worth strictly to work performance can have long-term negative consequences.
