Finland taxation outlook faces fiscal adjustment pressures
Experts discussed the future of Finnish taxation and the impact of public finance adjustments during a recent Market Council discussion. With an estimated need for 8–11 billion euros in fiscal adjustments in the next parliamentary term, there are concerns regarding how these changes will affect middle-income earners.
Terhi Järvikare, Head of the Tax Department at the Ministry of Finance, noted that the current marginal tax structure is problematic, but easing taxes for middle-income earners would be extremely costly given the state of public finances.
Jussi Junni, CEO of Taxpayers Association, criticized the transfer tax, stating it significantly hinders the housing market. He also warned that tightening taxation further could discourage additional work and impact economic growth. Lauri Finér, Executive Director of the Kalevi Sorsa Foundation, highlighted that while taxes are high, they fund essential services, noting that the value of a euro in Finland differs from that in the United States due to the social safety net.
