European hockey nations announce boycott of Russia following CAS ruling

Multiple European ice hockey federations, including Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Latvia, and the Czech Republic, have announced they will refuse to play against Russia in international competitions. This collective stance follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to reinstate Russian teams, overturning the ban imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The participating nations cited security concerns, geopolitical tensions, and the ongoing war in Ukraine as primary reasons for their refusal to face Russian squads. The boycott specifically targets upcoming tournaments, including the 2027 Men’s World Championship in Germany and the 2026/2027 World Junior Championships.

The ruling has created significant logistical and political challenges for the IIHF and tournament hosts. Germany is currently evaluating whether to withdraw as the host of the 2027 Men’s World Championship due to these complications. Additionally, the city of Turku, Finland, has stated it will refuse to host the 2028 World Junior Championship if Russia is permitted to participate. Commercial sponsors, such as AJ Products, have also expressed intentions to withdraw branding from events where Russian teams are present.
