Finland to introduce new citizenship test in 2027
The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) has announced details regarding a new citizenship test scheduled to begin in spring 2027. The test will be held 6 to 10 times per year at various locations across Finland, including the capital region, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Kuopio, Vaasa, and Rovaniemi.
As a new requirement for obtaining Finnish citizenship, the multiple-choice exam will assess an applicant's knowledge of Finnish society, including laws, human rights, equality, history, and culture. The test will be available in both Finnish and Swedish. Migri plans to release registration instructions, exam dates, a dedicated website, and study materials by the end of this year or early next year. The study materials will be at a B1 level and will include an audio version.
The requirement applies to applicants aged 18 to 64 who submit their citizenship applications on or after March 1, 2027. Existing requirements, such as language proficiency, means of support, and residency duration, will remain in effect.
