Finland transport sector faces crisis as diesel prices exceed 2.5 euros

Rising diesel prices in Finland have reached unsustainable levels for the transport sector, with prices in some areas exceeding 2.5 euros per liter as of early September 2026. SKAL CEO Anssi Kujala has stated that the industry has reached a breaking point, noting that two-thirds of transport companies have already had to renegotiate contracts with customers due to rising energy costs.

To mitigate the economic pressure, SKAL has proposed several measures, including reducing the fuel distribution obligation, lowering fuel taxes, and accelerating the implementation of professional diesel. There are also concerns regarding future costs; the introduction of emissions trading for transport fuel in 2028, combined with a tightening distribution obligation, could potentially push diesel prices above 3 euros per liter if those standards were applied today.
