Finland men's volleyball wins historic first European Championship bronze
The Finland men's national volleyball team has secured its first-ever European Championship medal, winning the bronze after defeating Slovenia with a 3-0 score in the third-place match. The historic achievement follows a strong tournament run where Finland defeated Italy in the quarterfinals after being considered underdogs.
Players expressed disbelief and pride regarding the victory. Middle blocker Severi Savonsalmi noted the significance of the moment, while hitter Joonas Jokela described the atmosphere as incredible, highlighting the team's journey from the European Silver League to the European Championship podium. The team's success was also attributed to the leadership of head coach Olli Kunnari.
In a separate technical incident during the semifinals against France, a substitution error occurred where the injured starting setter Ivanov was replaced by Välimaa. The change was reportedly overlooked by broadcasters for a significant portion of the set.
