Finland's economy modestly expands while Kainuu region faces near‑term slowdown
OP Pohjola’s regional forecast projects that the Kainuu area will see very modest growth in the coming years. After a period of strong performance, GDP is expected to contract by about 0.5 % in 2026 and to average roughly 0.1 % per year through 2031. The slowdown is largely attributed to demographic decline, although the region anticipates up to €14 billion in future investments, especially in data‑center and renewable‑energy projects. Unemployment in Kainuu hovered around 6.7 % in 2025 and is projected to briefly rise to about 7 % before a gradual decline.
Nationally, Finland’s economy showed its strongest quarterly growth in almost five years, with gross domestic product rising 0.9 % quarter‑on‑quarter in Q1 2024 and 1.0 % year‑on‑year. Growth was broad‑based, driven by a 31 % surge in public investment tied to the start of fighter‑jet deliveries, a 0.9 % rise in private consumption, a 6.5 % jump in total investment, and a rebound in exports. Consumer confidence improved after earlier falls, though unemployment trends remain upward, with the rate climbing toward 10.6 %.
