Finland's Kotka grilling spots attract locals, tourists and boost spicy‑sausage sales
In Kotka, a series of seaside grilling areas have become popular summer hang‑outs for residents and visitors alike. Families and groups gather at sites such as Katariina’s Meripuisto and Äijänniemi’s beach, where convenient amenities and the scent of charcoal draw crowds. German tourists have also joined the scene, staying in tents and enjoying the local atmosphere.
At the same time, Finnish grillers are shifting their taste preferences. A Lidl summer survey shows that about 80 % of Finns grill during the season, with a notable rise in demand for spicy sausages such as Merguez and Salciccia Toscana. Lidl’s product manager Siiri Oivanen reports increased sales of these specialty meats, alongside growing interest in vegan grill ribs and tofu. The combined trend highlights a broader evolution in Finnish summer cuisine, blending traditional fare with bolder flavors and plant‑based options.
