Finland's pay transparency directive faces criticism for perceived shortcomings

The Finnish Parliament is set to decide on the implementation of the EU pay transparency directive. The Finnish Trade Union Confederation (STTK) has expressed disappointment, stating that the current legislative proposal remains unchanged after review by the Employment and Equality Committee.

STTK argues that the proposal fails to utilize several tools provided by the directive to prevent wage discrimination. Key omissions identified by the union include a definition of equal work, requirements for gender-neutral job titles, and sufficient mechanisms for proving wage discrimination. Furthermore, the union claims that the proposed sanctions for employers are not effective enough.

While the committee reached a consensus with the government's interpretation, the report included two dissenting opinions. STTK President Else-Mai Kirvesniemi noted that the implementation lacks the ambition necessary to significantly strengthen pay equality and address discrimination against women.
