Finnish athletics clubs prepare for upcoming national and regional meets
The Joensuu Kataja athletics club will send a 26‑athlete team to Jyväskylä to compete at the renovated Harju stadium for SM medals. Recent performances include Mika Kotiranta’s 13:36.55 personal best in the 5000 m in Heusden, Belgium, Silja Kempas’s return to the 100 m sprint, and Noora Hukka’s 10th place in the U‑18 European 1500 m in Italy. The club’s junior athletes earned 86 medals and 48 district titles in recent competitions. Upcoming events listed by the club span from the Motonet monthly cup on July 23 to SM age‑group championships in Mikkeli (July 31‑August 2) and Hyvinkää (August 7‑9).
Separately, the Finnish Youth SM multi‑events are scheduled for August 15‑16 at Laitila’s central athletics field and Uusikaupunki’s Sorvakon field. Officials praised the organization, noting participation from athletes in the 14‑22 age categories. Laitila’s venue is undergoing renovation and will require further upgrades, while Uusikaupunki’s field is in good condition and slated to host future senior championships. Organisers aim for at least 200 spectators and are seeking city support for permanent seating.
Both initiatives reflect ongoing development of Finland’s track and field program at club and national youth levels.
