Finnish defense report warns of potential NATO-Russia war by 2040

A report titled ‘Finnish Operational Environment 2040’ by the Finnish Defence Research Agency (FDRA) warns of a potential large-scale war between Russia and NATO by the year 2040. The analysis suggests that Russia may become increasingly hostile and strengthen its military capabilities in neighboring regions.

One primary trigger identified is the potential withdrawal of United States military forces from Europe. Experts suggest Russia might exploit such a vacuum to demand security guarantees from neighboring states. If these demands are rejected by countries like Finland and the Baltic states, an open conflict could ensue.

The report outlines a scenario where Russia launches an attack on northern Finland to secure strategic interests on the Kola Peninsula, which houses its nuclear arsenal. The objective would be to advance rapidly through Finland and Sweden to reach ports on the Norwegian coast. Other identified potential targets include Poland, the Baltic states, and the Svalbard archipelago, the latter of which is gaining strategic importance due to melting Arctic ice and new trade routes.
