Finnish entrepreneurs call for regulatory reform and pension autonomy

In Finland, business leaders and policymakers are debating the impact of regulation on economic growth and individual autonomy. At the Turku Europe Forum, Päivi Puonti, chief economist for Suomen Yrittäjät, argued that excessive EU regulation focuses too heavily on risk mitigation, preventing companies from taking the productive risks necessary for success.

Finanssiala ry has proposed that financial supervisory authorities should incorporate economic growth and competitiveness into their decision-making processes. During the discussion, MEP Ville Niinistö expressed cautious support for considering growth, while MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen expressed skepticism.

Separately, a survey by Suomen Yrittäjät reveals significant dissatisfaction with the current YEL pension system. Approximately 83% of respondents expressed skepticism or disagreement regarding their trust in the existing system. The survey indicates strong support for reforms that would grant entrepreneurs more freedom to determine their own pension contributions and levels of security, particularly as the government prepares legislative proposals for reform.
