Finnish MP Timo Vornanen Denies Automatic Resignation Promise After Conviction

Finnish Member of Parliament Timo Vornanen said he never pledged to resign automatically if his court conviction remains legally binding. After the Supreme Court rejected his application to suspend the verdict, he reiterated that he would only step down if two‑thirds of the parliament demanded it, otherwise he will remain in office until parliament decides otherwise.

Vornanen was sentenced by a district court to eight months of conditional imprisonment for assault, two illegal threats and a firearm offence. The Supreme Court upheld the decision, refusing his appeal. Party leaders of the Social Democratic Party and the Swedish People's Party said they await Vornanen’s own decision, while the Finns Party is expected to discuss a motion to remove him. Vornanen was expelled from the Finns Party in spring 2024.
