Finnish organizations petition to eliminate hate speech in politics

A coalition of 62 organizations and foundations working with children and youth has issued a petition calling for political discourse in Finland to remain free from hate speech. The appeal targets decision-makers, candidates, and adults ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections, urging them to set a positive example for younger generations.

The petition highlights concerns regarding the societal impact of hate speech, noting that it creates inequality, silences specific groups, and can lead to dehumanization or violence. The movement follows warnings from international bodies: the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination expressed concern in August 2026 regarding increased racist hate speech by politicians and public figures in Finland, while the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has raised concerns about ongoing discrimination.

Additionally, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights has identified Finland as being perceived as one of the most racist countries in Europe. The petition emphasizes that leaders have a unique responsibility to combat hate speech, as their conduct influences public behavior and the safety of children and youth in environments such as schools.
