Finland political debate intensifies over rising fuel prices

Rising fuel prices and the general cost of living have sparked intense political debate in the Finnish Parliament. Opposition members, led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), have criticized the government for failing to provide adequate support to citizens facing high energy and transport costs.

SDP representatives proposed several measures to alleviate financial pressure, including increasing the commuting tax deduction, restoring unemployment and housing benefits, and moderating increases in healthcare fees. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo defended the government's actions, stating that they have already implemented measures that prevented pump prices from being approximately 20 cents higher. Orpo emphasized that the government must prioritize the most effective tools due to limited financial resources.

Separately, the Automobile Association (Autoliitto) has called for the removal of diesel taxes. The organization argued that current tax levels significantly impact the purchasing power of households and the viability of businesses. Autoliitto CEO Pasi Nieminen noted that increasing the commuting tax deduction is insufficient, as it does not assist retirees, students, the unemployed, or the transport costs of entrepreneurs.
