Finnish police report rise in moped chases in Western Uusimaa

Police in the Western Uusimaa region of Finland have reported a rising trend of moped riders fleeing from law enforcement. In the week leading up to August 7, three separate incidents were recorded in Espoo, Kirkkonummi, and Vihti, where riders ignored police signals and attempted to escape at high speeds.

In all documented cases, the riders were eventually apprehended. Commissioner Hannu Kontola noted that these evasions pose a significant danger to other road users, police officers, and the riders themselves. The police highlighted that many of these vehicles may have illegal modifications and the riders—often young people—frequently lack proper protective gear.

Authorities stated that fleeing a police stop invariably constitutes aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. Kontola warned that such actions can have long-lasting legal consequences and emphasized that the police are capable of identifying individuals even after they have fled.
