Finnish political leaders clash over economic and welfare policies
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and opposition leaders are engaged in a sharp debate over the nation's economic direction and social welfare policies.
Speaking at a National Coalition Party meeting in Tampere, Prime Minister Orpo defended his government's growth-oriented reforms, claiming they are beginning to yield results. He criticized the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for proposing tax and spending policies that he argues would “kill growth immediately.” Orpo emphasized the need for at least 8 billion euros in net spending cuts, primarily through direct expenditure reductions rather than tax increases, to meet fiscal targets.
Conversely, Minja Koskela, chair of the Left Alliance, accused the government of leaving Finland in a historically poor state. Citing research from Labor, Tampere University, and VATT, Koskela argued that social security cuts have increased poverty among low-income earners and working people alike. She specifically noted that these decisions have led to an increase of approximately 26,000 children living in low-income households and claimed the government's policies effectively transfer wealth from workers to owners.
