Finnish politicians to appear in Erikoisjoukot reality show
Finnish Members of Parliament are increasingly appearing in reality television, a trend that experts suggest can serve as both a political opportunity and a risk. The upcoming seasons of the show ‘Erikoisjoukot’ will feature several political figures, including National Coalition Party MP Noora Fagerström in the upcoming autumn season.
Looking ahead to the seventh season, scheduled for early 2027, Green Party leader Sofia Virta and Finns Party MP Mikko Lundén have been confirmed as participants. This follows a period of controversy in June when Virta was absent from parliamentary duties due to filming, a situation that was not initially communicated transparently. Lundén also confirmed his participation, noting he had been on sick leave following an injury sustained during filming but continued to engage in parliamentary work.
Markku Jokisipilä, director of the Parliamentary Research Centre, notes that television appearances can help politicians reach new voter groups and build a personal brand, which is vital in Finland’s candidate-centered electoral system. However, such public appearances are inherently political and can be interpreted as campaigning.
