Mauri Peltokangas faces criticism over controversial social media posts
Finnish Member of Parliament Mauri Peltokangas of the Finns Party is facing intense criticism following social media posts perceived as racist. Peltokangas questioned how many followers would want an ‘Afghani-Muslim’ as a minister, a comment widely interpreted as a direct attack on SDP Vice Chair Nasima Razmyar, the only MP of Afghan descent in Finland.
Opposition leader Antti Lindtman has condemned the remarks, accusing the government of tolerating politics rooted in racism and divisiveness. He has called on Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to address the conduct of his coalition partners.
Coalition partners, including the National Coalition Party, the Swedish People's Party (RKP), and the Christian Democrats, have demanded that the Finns Party handle the matter internally. RKP leader Otto Andersson described the comments as ‘revolting and completely inappropriate.’ The Finns Party parliamentary group leader, Jani Mäkelä, indicated that the matter might be discussed when the parliamentary group meets in early September.
