Finnish study links irregular sleep schedules to heart disease risk
A decade-long study conducted in Finland has found a significant link between irregular sleep schedules and increased cardiovascular risks. Researchers monitored participants using wearable devices to track sleep quality and timing.
The findings indicate that individuals with highly variable bedtimes—specifically those where the time of falling asleep fluctuates by more than two hours—suffer from heart attacks or strokes approximately twice as frequently. This increased risk is most pronounced in individuals who also experience insufficient sleep, defined as getting less than 7 hours and 56 minutes of rest.
Notably, the study found that the time of waking up does not appear to impact these risks. While shift workers often face challenges maintaining regular routines, the research suggests that the combination of irregular bedtime and insufficient sleep duration poses the greatest threat to cardiovascular health.
