Finnish welfare areas implement healthcare service reductions
Healthcare providers in Finland are implementing service changes and reductions to manage budgets. In the Central Ostrobothnia welfare area, Soite has announced temporary closures for various health center reception and laboratory services at multiple locations, including Halsua, Ullava, Toholampi, Koivuha, Lohtaja, Lestijärvi, Perho, and Kälviä. These closures are scheduled to occur during the latter part of 2026, with some services extending into early 2027. While these specific reception services are being temporarily suspended, other services such as dental care, maternity clinics, and social services are expected to continue as normal.
In the Kanta-Häme welfare area, Oma Häme is reducing occupational health nursing services for its staff. While statutory preventive occupational healthcare will remain, the treatment of common illnesses will be moved out of the occupational health system. These changes, which began in October 2024, are expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026. Critics have raised concerns regarding the potential for increased pressure on primary healthcare and the financial impact on employees.
