Dangote Refinery IPO enables regional access via African stock exchanges
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is launching a major initial public offering (IPO), with various African stock exchanges implementing structures to allow regional investor participation.
In Southern Africa, the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is set to host a regional Depository Receipt (DR) program. This initiative, coordinated by the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE), allows investors in countries like Zimbabwe to access the Nigerian refinery's shares through their domestic markets. The Financial Securities Exchange (FINSEC) in Zimbabwe has received regulatory approval to act as a distribution and order-routing platform for this regional program.
In East Africa, efforts are underway to provide access via Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs) on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). This mechanism would allow Kenyan investors to trade the refinery's stock in Kenyan Shillings, mitigating foreign exchange volatility. Some projections suggest the NSE listing could target December 2026.
While the IPO offers significant opportunities for regional capital market integration, some investors in Zimbabwe have noted that the process currently requires manual workflows due to cross-border custody and exchange-control requirements. The refinery remains a focal point for energy security and industrialization across the continent.
