Fintech industry leaders and the rise of AI in banking

Fintech Magazine has released its 2026 ranking of the top 100 fintech leaders, highlighting key figures driving global financial innovation. Notable leaders include Pony Ma, co-founder and CEO of Tencent, who has expanded the company from a messaging app into a giant covering digital payments via WeChat Pay, cloud computing, and social media. Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of Stripe, is recognized for building the economic infrastructure of the internet through simplified online payment tools. Ryan McInerney, CEO of Visa, is noted for expanding the company’s reach into fraud prevention, cross-border payments via Visa Direct, and digital wallet partnerships.

In a separate discussion on the future of the industry, Hyperlayer Co-Founder and CEO Rob Rooney suggests that traditional banks and credit unions may be uniquely positioned to lead in the era of artificial intelligence. Rooney argues that while fintech startups often dominate the innovation discourse, incumbent institutions possess critical advantages such as established customer bases, regulatory approvals, and consumer trust. He suggests these institutions can leverage their stability to succeed in the emerging agentic economy, particularly when utilizing programmable banking platforms like Hyperlayer to innovate without replacing core legacy systems.
