Fintech sector faces rising software supply chain security risks
Fintech companies are increasingly vulnerable to software supply chain risks due to their heavy reliance on a global ecosystem of open-source libraries, container images, and third-party components. While these firms often have robust processes for securing applications and commercial vendors, the underlying software components frequently receive less scrutiny.
Risks enter fintech platforms through developer decisions, such as adding libraries or using AI coding assistants, which can introduce dependencies with known vulnerabilities or malicious functionality. For example, a scan of the official Redis 8.10.0 container image using the Trivy scanner identified 185 known CVEs, including four critical and 47 high-severity findings.
Experts suggest that software supply chain security must be treated as an enterprise-wide risk rather than a strictly engineering concern to bridge the current gap in technology risk management.
