Fiocruz to lead health research in Rio Doce Basin

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has appointed Fiocruz to coordinate a research network focused on the health impacts within the Rio Doce Basin. This initiative aims to study the long-term effects on populations affected by the 2015 Fundão dam collapse, which released over 40 million cubic meters of mining waste.

The research will cover 49 municipalities across the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. The project includes conducting epidemiological surveys, literature reviews, and establishing a situation room to monitor indicators and release regular reports. Technical analyses will also be provided to support public management and inform the population.

Funding for the network is provided by the Rio Doce Fund, managed by BNDES. An initial disbursement of R$ 22.27 million has been made, with total transfers expected to reach R$ 66.8 million by 2028. This fund is part of the New Rio Doce Agreement, which allocates R$ 100 billion for reparations, with R$ 49.1 billion designated for federal initiatives.
