Fiorella Ycaza enters Guayaquil mayoral race
Fiorella Ycaza, a businesswoman and wife of current Guayaquil Mayor Aquiles Alvarez, has officially formalized her pre-registration as a candidate for the Mayoralty of Guayaquil. The announcement, made on August 13, 2026, positions her as a contender for the sectional elections scheduled for November 29, 2026.
Ycaza stated she is entering the race with “hope, firmness and the conviction that our city deserves to continue advancing, growing and building opportunities for all.” She also expressed her trust in “the law, democracy and, above all, the strength of the people of Guayaquil.”
Her candidacy emerges during a period of legal challenges for her husband, Aquiles Alvarez. The Mayor was recently sentenced to three years in prison in the “Grillete” case and remains linked to the “Goleada” investigation involving alleged money laundering. Ycaza’s entry into the race is seen as an effort to maintain the political continuity of the current administration's project.
