Fiorella Ycaza registers candidacy for Guayaquil Mayoralty

Ecuador's National Electoral Council (CNE) has closed the registration period for local elections. As of August 16, 2026, the CNE reported 14,092 main candidates registered.

In Guayaquil, Fiorella Ycaza, wife of the current mayor Aquiles Alvarez, has officially registered her candidacy for the Mayoralty. Running under the Ecuadorian Socialist Party (PSE), Ycaza's candidacy is seen as an attempt by the Revolución Ciudadana movement to maintain political continuity. This move follows the legal situation of Aquiles Alvarez, who is currently in preventive detention and facing multiple criminal investigations, including cases related to money laundering and illegal hydrocarbon distribution.

Other notable registrations include Andrés Roche for the Social Christian Party (PSC) in Guayaquil, and Jorge Yunda and Pabel Muñoz in Quito. In Quevedo, Galo Lara Yépez has been cleared to run for Mayor under the National Democratic Action Movement (ADN) after no legal challenges were filed against his candidacy.
