Fire at L&R Comercial store in Santo Domingo Este sparks looting

A blaze broke out on Saturday, August 1, at the four‑storey L&R Comercial warehouse in Santo Domingo Este, Dominican Republic. The fire required nearly twenty emergency units and a Dominican Air Force helicopter to douse the flames, and firefighters expected to finish extinguishing the blaze later in the day.

While the fire was being fought, dozens of people took advantage of the chaos to enter the premises and steal appliances, televisions, fans and other goods. Police arrested 17 individuals caught in the act and recovered more than 170 stolen items, as well as a monitor and a shotgun belonging to the store’s security. The National Police denied any involvement by its officers. Sociologists cited the incident as an example of "situational anomie," where normal social controls weaken during emergencies.

The incident caused significant material damage to the L&R Comercial facility, though the exact financial loss has not yet been quantified.
