Fire at Piraeus Underground Construction Site Triggers Massive Rescue

A fire erupted on Tuesday midday in the underground construction area of the Judicial Megaron in Piraeus, Greece, near the intersection of Meton and Fokionos streets. Hundreds of workers were trapped alongside flammable materials and propane bottles that could have turned the site into a "fire depot".

Fifteen firefighters with five fire engines, assisted by volunteers, quickly contained the blaze, preventing a larger disaster and saving hundreds of lives. Captain George Vallis, president of the Panhellenic Association of Private and Professional Seafarers, praised the firefighters' swift action and called the incident a warning sign for safety measures, urging a zero‑tolerance policy for any safety lapses in both land and sea operations.
