Fire at Wa Islamic Senior High School Girls' Dormitory in Ghana

A fire broke out on the night of 2 August at the girls' dormitory of Wa Islamic Senior High School in Ghana's Upper West Region. The blaze, reported around 10:30 PM, quickly spread across several dormitory blocks, prompting an urgent response from the Wa Municipal Fire Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and local volunteers.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain the flames and prevent them from reaching adjacent buildings. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with early reports suggesting a possible electrical fault. Several students suffered minor injuries such as burns and smoke inhalation, and many were evacuated, some jumping from windows. No fatalities have been reported.

The incident caused extensive damage to the hostel, including collapsed ceilings and destroyed personal belongings. Police officers were deployed to assist with investigations, and the Ministry of Education has been notified. Authorities have promised temporary accommodation for displaced students while repairs are carried out.
