Bucheon factory fire kills firefighter and sparks political controversy

A fatal fire at a metal parts coating factory in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, resulted in the death of firefighter Kim Jin-seok and injuries to seven others, including five firefighters. The incident occurred on October 16, when Kim, an 11-year veteran, responded to the blaze just 20 minutes before his scheduled shift ended. He was found in cardiac arrest after being trapped by rapidly spreading flames.

Following the tragedy, Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae faced intense criticism for her recent comments during a National Assembly audit, where she described firefighting budgets as a “troublesome financial straw.” Choo visited the funeral of the deceased firefighter on October 17 to offer a formal apology, stating she had no intention of disparaging firefighters and that her remarks were a mistake made while discussing structural fiscal issues.

While members of the Democratic Party supported her apology, the People Power Party condemned her response as defensive and insincere. Meanwhile, police have formed a 33-member task force to investigate the cause of the fire. Preliminary findings indicate the factory lacked a sprinkler system and had no permit to handle the large quantities of flammable materials found at the scene.
