Fire clouds intensify massive forest fires in France and Spain
France and Spain are battling the worst forest‑fire season in years, with approximately 115,000 hectares burned in France and more than 172,000 hectares in Spain—six times the area affected at the same time last year. Over 300,000 residents have been evacuated across the two countries.
The extreme fires are generating pyrocumulonimbus clouds, also called fire clouds, which can produce strong, unpredictable winds, lightning strikes dozens of kilometres from the fire core, and loft burning embers that start new spot fires. Craig Clements, director of the Interagency Wildfire Research Center in the United States, warned that these clouds can create thunderstorms and spark additional ignitions far from the main blaze.
In response, the European Union Emergency Coordination Centre has activated its 24‑hour response system, coordinating assistance from about ten other nations and using the Copernicus satellite constellation to deliver high‑resolution imagery and real‑time fire mapping. The centre’s tools allow rapid analysis of fire progression and help allocate resources where they are most needed.
