Fire clouds over France and Spain wildfires trigger EU response

Intense wildfires in France and Spain have generated pyrocumulonimbus, or fire clouds, that produce strong winds and lightning capable of igniting new fires up to 60 miles away. In France, about 115,000 hectares have burned, while Spain has lost roughly 172,000 hectares, six times the area burned at the same time last year. More than 300,000 people have been evacuated across the two countries. The EU Emergency Coordination Centre is coordinating assistance from about ten countries and operating 24/7 across 27 EU members and 10 non‑EU states. Satellite imagery from the Copernicus program is being used to create high‑accuracy fire maps and assess the affected areas. President Emmanuel Macron described the French blaze as the most severe crisis since World War II, and scientists warn that rising temperatures will make such fire‑cloud events more common.
