Fire Continues at Iran‑Iraq Hoor al‑Azim Wetland

A large fire broke out on the northern part of the Hoor al‑Azim wetland on the afternoon of 6 August (Shahrivar 6, 1405) and remains uncontrolled because operational teams cannot reach the site. Officials say the blaze was deliberately set by local livestock owners who burned vegetation to promote fresh forage, a practice also linked to a smaller fire in the same area four days earlier.

The Hoor al‑Azim wetland, one of the biggest trans‑border wetlands of Iran and Iraq, plays a critical role in biodiversity, dust suppression, climate moderation and the livelihoods of nearby farmers and herders. Repeated fires and prolonged drought have been aggravated by chronic water‑shortage issues; water releases intended to refill the wetland have been insufficient, and oil‑company restrictions have limited full water intake. Environmental activists blame the lack of regular water allocation for the increased fire risk.

The ongoing blaze contributes to air‑quality problems in Khuzestan province, adding smoke and dust to the already polluted atmosphere of Ahvaz and surrounding areas.
