Fire destroys nine rooms of late MP Murtala Mohammed’s family home in Tamale

A blaze broke out on August 5, 2026 at the family home of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament Murtala Mohammed in Tamale, Ghana. The fire consumed nine of the 17 rooms before firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) contained it.

GNFS Northern Regional Public Relations Officer ADO I Hudu Baba said the service received the distress call at 3:29 p.m. and firefighters arrived eight minutes later, rescuing two schoolchildren trapped inside. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage. Murtala Mohammed, who died in a military helicopter crash in August 2025, was a prominent political figure.

The incident highlights the rapid response of local emergency services and the ongoing safety concerns surrounding the property of the late MP.
