Fire destroys tourist accommodations on Los Uros floating islands

A large-scale wildfire has devastated the northern sector of the Los Uros floating islands on Lake Titicaca in the Puno region of Peru. The fire, fueled by high winds and extremely dry totora reeds, spread rapidly through the highly flammable artisanal structures made of straw, wood, and totora.

The blaze has resulted in the total loss of multiple experiential tourism lodging modules, communal homes, and local handicrafts. Affected families have lost their working capital, personal belongings, and essential equipment. Local leaders have called for immediate humanitarian assistance, including tents and shelter, from regional authorities and civil defense.

The Peruvian Navy has deployed the patrol boat Ramis, along with specialized equipment and crew, to assist in managing the emergency. Beyond the destruction of infrastructure, the fire threatens the livelihoods of approximately 3,000 residents who depend on tourism, agriculture, and livestock, as well as local wildlife near the Titicaca National Reserve.
