IFK Göteborg derby halted by fire, replayed behind closed doors

The Swedish Allsvenskan derby between Örgryte IS and IFK Göteborg was interrupted in the 40th minute after IFK supporters set fire to scarves and other items in the away stand at Gamla Ullevi. The blaze produced thick smoke, prompting police to extinguish the fire and evacuate a stadium officer who later required hospital treatment.

At the time of the stoppage IFK Göteborg were leading 2‑1. After more than an hour of delay, officials suspended the match and later decided it would be resumed the following day at 15:00, restarting from the 39th minute and played without spectators. The incident sparked criticism from both clubs’ staff over the lengthy waiting period before a decision was made.

The fire and subsequent suspension highlighted security concerns at Swedish football venues and led to an investigation by police into the actions of the supporters responsible for the arson.
