Fire in Huelva shanty town kills one and evacuates 90
A fire in the La Sevillana informal settlement in Lucena del Puerto, Huelva, resulted in the death of a 36-year-old Malian national during the early hours of Tuesday. The blaze affected approximately 50 shanties and forced the evacuation of 90 people.
Emergency services, including the Huelva Provincial Firefighters Consortium, the Civil Guard, and local police, responded to the scene after alerts began around 4:22 AM. The fire also impacted butane canisters and a forested area. Emergency teams identified electrical risks due to connections to a power line, prompting a temporary shutdown of the supply.
The fire was extinguished by 9:40 AM. While several individuals required medical assistance for minor injuries, the 90 evacuees were able to stay with relatives, negating the need for emergency shelters. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
