Fire Prevention Week emphasizes lithium-ion battery safety

Fire Prevention Week, running from October 4 to 10, focuses on the theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” This year’s campaign emphasizes the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries found in common devices such as cellphones, laptops, e-bikes, and scooters.

To mitigate the risk of overheating, fires, or explosions, safety experts recommend using only manufacturer-approved chargers and cords. Devices should be charged on hard, flat surfaces like tables or desks rather than soft surfaces like couches or beds, which can trap heat. Additional safety measures include unplugging devices once fully charged, charging large battery-powered items outdoors, and immediately discontinuing use if a device feels excessively hot, smells unusual, or shows signs of swelling.

In Lynnwood, South County Fire is hosting an open house at Blue Ridge Fire Station 14 on October 3 to kick off the week. The event will feature station tours, fire engine demonstrations, and hands-on practice with fire extinguishers.
